I am happy to report that we have passed several milestones. First, the radio logs have been uploaded over Internet and sent out as e-QSLs, providing individual radio operators with an email confirmation of their contacts with the expedition. The logs are available in their entirety for downloading by anyone with ftp software. In addition, the logs were successfully downloaded to the WJ2O computer in New York, where the first printed QSLs cards are being prepared for mailing. Some of these cards will arrive at their destinations within a few days, while we are still on Easter Island. As of 11 Sep 95 we have logged about 20,000 contacts with radio amateurs worldwide.
The Chilean Navy vessel LST Maipo under the command of Ulf Baadier Matthei has deposited four expedition team members and one Chilean Navy service men on the barren islet of Salas y Gomez. Drop off took place via helicopter on September 5. Video footage of the landing was provided by Lt. Commander Matthei and his staff when they arrived at Easter Island on September 8. Today (September 11) they leave Rapanui to return to the mainland, picking up the team from Salas on the way (probably on the 13th).
After the initial series of dives on the northeast corner of Easter Island, the dive team moved to the south and explored the tiny islet called Moto Nui, below the cliffs of Orongo, the traditional site of the bird-man competition. They reported seeing many of the same species as seen around the Poike peninsula.
The team members are just now finding time to explore the other areas of Easter Island. With 2 jeeps, 1 van, 1 motorcyle, and 2 bicycles, we still have barely enough transportation to accomodate the needs of the group. With the arrival of one more team member, we are now 26.

Chilean Navy pilot and crewman work in perfect unison to transport gear from the ship to the island. Check out how the pilot holds the helicopter just feet off the deck while his compatriot attaches the lifting cable.

Two views of the Expedition campsite at La Perouse. In the first north lies at the top of the picture. In the second north is to the left. The large white spot is the main tent at the center of camp. To the east lie the expedition sleeping and radio tents. A small community of fishermen occupies the buildings and tents to the west.
