I spent 6 months living in Nepal in 1992 as part of a university program. We studied the language and lived with families in the capital of Kathmandu and the mountains to the East. The program runs a tuberculosis clinic, and students participate in the consruction of a drinking water system in a remote Sherpa village. Nepal is a beautiful country and the experience was one of the defining periods of my life. The conflict of recent years has been heart-rending to watch. My hopes are with the Nepali people in the coming years, as it appears that there is a chance for some resolution to the conflict and forward progress towards a more democratic society.
